Sales Zen: Authentic Alignment in the Era of AI
How to Eliminate Stalled Deals and Map Internal Roadblocks Using AI
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Pitching a solution, getting a positive initial reaction, and then facing total radio silence is a sign of a fundamental gap in enterprise sales strategy. Moving through the sales cycle without mapping the client’s internal governance and political dynamics turns high-probability opportunities into phantom deals stuck in committee. The cost of neglecting organizational psychology isn't just lost revenue, it is wasted cognitive bandwidth and an accurate forecast destroyed by unmanaged buyer risk.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to shift discovery away from basic budget questions toward uncovering internal legal, finance, and operational sign offs.
- The execution strategy for co-creating Mutual Action Plans that hold clients accountable to campaign timelines.
- Tactics for identifying personal risk reduction and consensus maps to establish yourself as an irreplaceable advisor rather than a transactional vendor.
Using AI as a strategic co-pilot allows ad sales professionals to offload deep administrative account mapping and research, reclaiming the mental energy required for genuine human connection and empathy. By applying the RIGS framework (Role, Instruction, Guardrail, Specifics), you can prompt AI to simulate enterprise buying committees, highlight procurement friction points, and craft targeted, value driven outreach when a prospect goes quiet.

Does this sound familiar? You've been working with a client for a while, or you just pitched a solution to a new prospect. Either way, you got through the entire sales cycle and just wrapped your proposal meeting. The client tells you everything looks good, and they'll get back to you. Then nothing. You don't hear a thing from them for the next few days. You send a checking in email, you leave voicemails, and still nothing. After chasing them for a while, they finally get back to you saying they're still reviewing everything internally. Honestly, you are cooked. Not that you'll never get the deal, but it is a hundred percent out of your control now. Not because it isn't the best solution, not because you aren't amazing at your job. Because you have no idea how their buying process works, what actually happens behind the scenes for them to say yes. Welcome to Sales Zen, the podcast for media and ad tech sales professionals who are tired of the never-ending numbers game. We drop the hustle culture noise to talk about what it actually takes to build a high-performing career, master AI transformation, and separate from outcomes without sacrificing your authentic self. If you're new here, hi, I'm Kevin Currie. I've spent thirty years in media and ad tech sales, moving from IC to leadership at companies like Meta, Yelp, and in the NFL with the Detroit Lions. I hold Gen AI certifications from both Google and Stanford University, but my focus isn't on the technology. It's on the human being using it. I work directly with ad sales teams, leaders, and reps to master client psychology, up-level enterprise sales skills, and navigate career growth by leveraging AI and communication skills to achieve authentic alignment and true sales zen. In the hustle culture of today's ad sales world, blasting enterprise media decision-makers with automated multi-touch sequences and standard boilerplate decks ignores the internal risk profile, turning your outreach into instant digital noise. Buyers rarely buy because of feature superiority. They buy based on personal risk reduction, internal status alignment, and procurement safety. The automated transactional seller pushes standard rate cards, feature lists, and pitch decks without asking who actually controls the budget approvals, legal or tech review. The authentic aligned partner, the ones who consistently close deals and hit their quota, uncover the hidden consensus map early, identifying sign-offs, potential landmines, and organizational anxieties before even making a proposal. I've been guilty of this many times in my sales career. I start feeling the internal pressure. I have a client who seems aligned and has shown minimal, if any, friction. I start moving quickly through the process, so I'm not the one holding up the deal, and I can get those crucial in quarter dollars. I neglect to understand the client's real internal buying process and political dynamics, which guarantees a phantom deal that dies in committee. Sometimes just asking the question is enough. Other times, the client doesn't disclose the process, or in the example above, you've already passed the point of no return. If you find yourself in either of these places, use AI to help by applying the RIGS framework. Have the role act as an enterprise ad tech strategic buyer. Instructions are to map out a typical multi-stake buying committee and procurement friction points for a specific client or client persona. For the guardrail, exclude standard sales pitch talking points. Focus purely on governance, finance, legal, and operational sign-offs. And for specifics, output a checklist of key internal stakeholders and potential procurement landmines. If the client is already in ghosting mode, this will help you understand the potential hurdles and customize your outreach based on this hypothesis, so you're not just sending follow-up emails. Equally as important, delegating account mapping and research to AI frees your mind to focus purely on human empathy, listening, and client connection. In addition to offloading the task to AI, here are three things you can implement immediately in your process. First, ask the buying process map question early. Shift your discovery from what is your budget to when you've approved major media investments like this in the past, who else has to sign off on it behind the scenes? Second, co-create a mutual action plan. Build a transparent step-by-step roadmap alongside the buyer that details legal review, security audits, and finance sign-offs. And finally, the third step, protect your mental energy. Stop chasing deals with unidentified buyer journeys. Focus your high-value energy strictly on opportunities where the consensus path is clear. In advertising sales, we have the advantage of having clients already working on timelines. Work backward from the intended campaign start date and include all milestone deadlines, including budget review. Do this during the beginning of the conversation. Identify who does what by when, and act as the project manager to hold everyone, including the client, accountable. I've always said, "No details, no deadline, no deal." Becoming an expert in client organizational psychology and decision architecture establishes you as an irreplaceable enterprise advisor, not just another vendor. It reclaims your cognitive bandwidth to focus on high priority activities and ensures alignment with the client and internally with your forecast. That's it for this episode of the Sales Zen podcast.
