Sales Zen: Authentic Alignment in the Era of AI
Human-Centered Discovery & AI Account Prep for Adtech Sales
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Most discovery meetings fail because reps treat them like courtroom depositions running through rigid BANT checklists just to satisfy CRM requirements. This interrogation mindset triggers buyer defense mechanisms, causing fatigue, guarded responses, and lost deals. When sellers focus on asking the next scripted question rather than actively listening, they sacrifice authentic alignment for automated transaction.
What You’ll Learn:
- The Co-Creation Framework: How to open discovery with a validated hypothesis of buyer pain points rather than firing off open ended, rapid fire questions.
- The Cushion and Toss: A tactical communication technique to validate buyer complexity with empathy before probing deeper into personal and business impact.
- Depth Over Breadth: Why asking fewer questions with targeted, curious follow-ups builds unearned trust far faster than covering a 10-point checklist.
The AI Alignment Delegating manual pre call research and account synthesis to AI restores critical cognitive bandwidth before entering the meeting. By executing a targeted RIGS prompt (Role, Instruction, Guardrail, Specifics), sellers can instantly map company trends, outline executive priorities, and generate contextual questions. Automating administrative prep allows reps to show up with 100% presence, moving from an automated vendor to an irreplaceable strategic partner.

Did you just crush a client discovery meeting by asking all the right questions to keep your manager happy and create amazing notes in your CRM? There's a good chance if you did, the meeting was a complete waste of time. Most discovery meetings fail because reps are so focused on asking the right questions that they completely miss how the buyer is feeling. True discovery isn't an interrogation. It's psychological profiling. The traditional grind harder mindset tells you to run through a rigid fifteen-question BANT checklist. Treat discovery like a courtroom deposition and push for a proposal meeting at all costs. The reality: buyer fatigue, guarded answers, and lost deals. Welcome to Sales Zen, the podcast for media and ad tech sales professionals who are tired of the never-ending numbers game. We drop the hustle culture noise to talk about what it actually takes to build a high-performing career, master AI transformation, and separate from outcomes without sacrificing your authentic self. If you're new here, hey, I'm Kevin Currie. I've spent thirty years in media and ad tech sales, moving from IC to leadership. I hold Gen AI certifications from both Google and Stanford University. But my focus isn't on the technology. It's on the human being using it. I work directly with ad sales teams, leaders, and reps to master client psychology, up-level enterprise sales skills, and navigate career growth by leveraging AI and communication skills to achieve authentic alignment and true sales zen. When you meet with your client, they don't enter discovery meetings wanting to be evaluated. They enter with defense mechanisms up, wary of being pitched solution-oriented buzzwords before their actual problems are understood. Even if you have a strong relationship with them, nobody wants to be interrogated. If you've been trained through a rigid sales system, you know the ones I'm talking about, and you follow their script, you're likely an automated seller, reading off standard questions, frantically taking notes, and pivoting immediately to product capabilities the moment a keyword is dropped. Being an authentically aligned partner means being curious. It means listening actively, reading the organizational politics behind the answers, validating the buyer's internal stress, and co-creating the problem definition in real time. I had a rep on my team that did an amazing job of research before discovery meetings. He knew the client's world, identified potential gaps in their marketing plan, and he had a really good understanding of what he could do to help them. Then he entered the room. He came with a list of questions. Regardless of the client's answer, he moved through the list one by one, taking a quick note, then moving on to the next one. To the client, this felt like a rapid-fire hot seat. To me, during the meetings I attended, it felt like the rep had zero interest in understanding the client and their needs and was simply throwing out questions to fill in his CRM notes. And the ultimate outcome was an awkward meeting, lack of trust from the client, and minimal, if any, further understanding of the client's needs. If you find it difficult to really deep dive with clients during discovery, I encourage you to leverage AI. Don't waste critical mental bandwidth before or during a discovery call trying to manually synthesize company details, recent ad campaigns, or executive priorities. Use a precise RIGS prompt, role, instruction, guardrail, specifics, to delegate pre-call research and account synthesis. Let AI map out company trends, draft contextual questions, and organize account notes in seconds. By automating the account prep, including asking questions that truly matter, you enter the room with a hundred percent presence and mental clarity, focusing entirely on being curious, active listening, and pausing to ensure alignment. In addition to AI, there are three things you can do immediately to better align with clients during discovery. First, shift from interrogation to co-creation. Start calls with a hypothesis of their pain points based on your prep. Rather than open-ended interrogation, let them correct or validate your view. Next, practice the cushion and toss. When a buyer drops a heavy pain point or objection, don't rush to answer. Cushion the insight with genuine empathy, validate the organizational complexity, and toss back a targeted question on how that affects them personally and to better understand the why. And finally, go deep instead of wide. Your first question should be surface level. Then, based on their answer, follow up to better understand the why behind what they told you. If you run a thirty-minute discovery and ask all ten questions you had ready to go, you likely failed. If you run that thirty-minute meeting and ask only one or two of those questions, but ask curious follow-ups, you will likely leave the meeting with alignment, and that is the ultimate goal. AI can generate the questions, but it cannot earn unearned trust. Mastering human-centered discovery builds immediate authority, turning you from just another vendor on an RFP list to an irreplaceable partner. That's it for this episode of the Sales Zen podcast.
